Becoming a Travel Writer with Travel Guidebooks
There are many ways to become a travel writer. The key to becoming a travel writer is to simply do some travel writing. Since travel writing takes many forms- from travel blogging and personal travel websites to magazine articles and hotel reviews- there are many options for becoming a travel writer. One of the best areas for travel writing is the travel guidebook.
Did you know that there are over 350 different travel guidebook publishers out there? Further, each publisher publishes numerous guidebook titles. What that means is if you want to become a travel writer, doing guidebook travel writing is one potential place to start. As an added bonus, if you are just starting out as a travel writer, you can gain important travel writing experience by updating an existing travel guidebook.
Travel writing for guidebooks is an excellent way to become a travel writer. If you know of an interesting location that others enjoy visiting, chances are there’s a market for a guidebook there. So the first step in travel writing for guidebooks is to come up with a guidebook idea. Once you have an idea, research the market to see if a guidebook (or guidebooks) already exist(s) on the topic. If they do, how will you make your travel writing different from what’s already on the market? Next, draft a book proposal and send it out to a potential publisher. Once the travel writing contract is signed, the only thing left is to start your travel writing.
